Racing homer pigeon History
Homer Pigeons or Racing homer are very interesting birds in India and all over the world. They are different from other pigeons because they are able to find their way home when released from hundreds of miles away from home. The story of racing homer pigeons goes back to ancient times when these racing homer pigeons where used in battle fields to pass the messages back to home. Men first tamed and trained these homer pigeons thousands of years ago.
Doves and pigeons are put in the same family by scientific experts. There are more than twelve hundred kinds of pigeons. They live in every continent except the cold Antarctic, but mostly in the tropics where the largest and most beautiful pigeons are found.
India has always been a place for racing homer pigeons and racing homer pigeons fanciers. We can see hundreds of racing homer pigeons fanciers feeding, breeding and racing their racing homer all over India.
The homer pigeons and all other tame pigeons are descendants of wild pigeons, the common rock dove of southern Europe, northern Africa and western Asia and India. Perhaps the rock dove found it easier to get food in grain fields and to nest on the rafters of huts and barns. Pigeons can still be found living in this half-tamed way, nesting on ledges of buildings.
The domestic pigeons developed when man began to feed and shelter pigeons. As people took more interest in these pigeons, they started feeding and breeding them to produce more desirable pigeons. Pigeons were selected and bred for their beautiful or odd appearance. Finally, since homer pigeons find their way home from distant places, they have been bred for racing. These pigeons are known as racing homer.
Racing homer pigeons
Racing homer pigeons are bred from four or five breeds of European pigeons, each with top homing ability. The result are pigeons that can find its way home a thousand miles or more.
The ability to return from great distances is no unique gift of racing homer pigeons. Some pigeons return to their exact nesting sites year after year.
The development of racing homer pigeons was began by Belgians about 1700. At the first homer pigeons race in 1732, the time for the three-mile course was two and half hours. Modern racing homer pigeons can do a hundred miles in less time than that, because amateurs in England and America have steadily bred the birds for stamina and for speed.
Most of the pigeons fanciers in Inida are now intrested in racing homer pigeons. These racing homer pigeons are bred across India for better performance day by day. Homer pigeons fanciers in India take part in the homer pigeons race which looks to be a great entertainment for the pigeons fanciers in India. I have seen race distance from 100 KM to 2000 KM in India. I think fanciers in india should more look into proper training and feeding the pigeons.
In India racing homer pigeons club can be found in all most all the major cities. But, most of the racing homer fanciers in india don't maintain pedigrees. You can find most of the bloodlines in India which was imported by the fanciers from other countries to India. Intrestingly, i haven't seen many people asking for pedigrees in India.
If you want to start raising your own racing homer, begin with only one or two pairs of racing homer pigeons. Get the finest racing homer pigeons you can afford. I hope you can get all the good bloodlines in India.
